I spent June and July of 2010 in Queretaro attending the OLE language school. Of course people asked me "is it safe? Aren't you worried?" We have all seen plenty of stories about drug wars in Mexico. The summer was wonderful and none of our group felt threatened in any way.

We Americans tend to forget that Mexico is a big country. We do not recognize that Queretaro is 500 miles from Monterrey, the nearest city that is having gang violence problems and 1200 miles from Juarez, the center of the violence. Its like saying that we would not visit Myrtle Beach because we hear that Washington D.C. has gang problems. Or staying out of California because we hear rappers talk about Compton. Queretaro is a wonderful city in the beautiful historic center of Mexico. It is certainly safer than where I live. The school will take good care of you and make sure that you learn Spanish and get to experience Mexican culture and hospitality. It would be a shame to miss out on a great opportunity because of overgeneralized fears.
